OCR for 7 segment display(algorithm)

Hi.
I am currently holding on to a project on
'Optical Character Recognition for Seven–Segment Display Digits'.
because i do not have a strong fundamental for Matlab program, therefore i really need help on codes from you guys.

Things i did:
taking an image of a weighing machine value.

Things i need to do on matlab:
reading the image and display it out in figure.
changing it to a grayscale and to a binaryscale.
from binaryscale, i will need to crop each digit of
A,B,C,D,E,F & G out AUTOMATICALLY.
[ look attached photo ]


and then i will have to do out a matrix form in 1(white) OR 0(black) in order to display the digit out.
