Java lower level graphics programming

Hi,

I'm posting a question, mostly out of curiosity.

Can someone create a Java program to be run from the command line that displays graphics or animation?

IE: When there was MSDOS, people could run Windows or various games from the command line and have control over the VGA chipset. Can this be done with Java in Linux?
